Case Study: Business Operations Manager in Alternative Proteins
Andrew Sayles is a Business Operations Manager at Mission Barns, a Bay Area startup focused on developing cultivated meat, specifically animal fat. With a general business degree and a non-STEM background, Andrew's journey into the Alternative Protein industry began after college, driven by his awareness of the issues in traditional animal agriculture and his passion for food.
He has navigated various roles and rejections, gaining experience in sales and marketing before landing his current position at Mission Barns. Andrew's role involves a wide range of responsibilities, from office management to financial planning, and he is motivated by the mission to revolutionize the food industry and its positive impact on the planet.
This is a summary of the interview that Andrew gave on the “Cultivating Careers in the Alternative Protein Industry” podcast with Jeffray Behr.
How did you first hear about Alternative Proteins?
I became aware of the issues in traditional animal agriculture, like climate change and antibiotic resistance, and the inefficiency of the system. This, combined with my love for food, inspired me to dive into the Alternative Protein space.
Did you envision a career in Alternative Proteins back then?
Initially, I didn't. It was a gradual realization after college when I was exploring the biggest problems in the world and the food industry's impact.
Was there a particular moment you decided to pursue this full-time?
It was more of a gradual process. After college, I started reading and watching documentaries about food production, which solidified my interest. My interest peaked when I learned about vertical farming and cultivated meat.
How did you manage to get your job at Mission Barns?
It was a long journey. I initially faced rejections due to my non-STEM background. I worked in sales and marketing, gained experience, and kept an eye on the industry. When Mission Barns raised their Series A, I applied for a position. Although I was turned down initially, I reapplied six months later for a business operations role and got it.
Can you describe your role at Mission Barns?
I handle a bit of everything on the administrative side—office operations, purchasing, budgeting, vendor relations, IT systems, and lab maintenance. It's exciting to work with a small, dynamic team and be involved in various aspects of the business.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
The people I work with are incredibly creative and passionate. I also love the food aspect, including taste tests of our products. The belief that I'm contributing to a significant impact makes my job rewarding.
What is the company culture like at Mission Barns?
It's constantly evolving as we grow. We have a mix of scientists, chefs, and business personnel, all working together with a space-race mentality. It's a friendly competition with other companies in the cultivated meat industry.
What is your least favorite part of your job?
The responsibility of diving deep into the agricultural industry and learning uncomfortable truths about food production can be tough. However, it's necessary to stay informed and driven.
Do you have any advice for those looking to enter the Alternative Protein field?
Stay informed by reading and listening to podcasts. Follow companies on LinkedIn, and have a game plan. Work hard in your current role, as the skills you develop will help you transition into this industry. Persistence and patience are key.
